Fashion from "The Notebook"
HERE'S HOW TO GET ALLIE'S STYLE FOR THOSE OF YOU ON A BUDGET
There are two things that are key to looking like Allie:
- Buttons. From the cute buttons-with-collar dress she wore on her first date with Noah to the printed dress with buttons all along the side on the day she and Noah had ice cream together and of course, her blue dress on the famous boat scene. Allie Hamilton is not Allie Hamilton without the buttons. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Pull out your polos or sew on buttons yourself to old dresses from thrift shops to give them a whole new look.
- Thick Headbands. From the beach scene to when Allie first visits Noah at his new home, Allie is seen wearing thick headbands with a great flower on the side. Headbands are key to looking 1940s. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Headbands are not expensive at all. Forever 21 has them CHEAP. Can't find a headband with a flower? Make a flower out of fabric scraps yourself! This is all about innovation.
1920s Based Outfit: The Fun Look
Details: Silk Sheer Bow Charcoal Blouse $45 shopruche.com, 25" Bohemian Skirt ($23) wetseal.com, American Eagle Caesar Gladiator Flats $23 payless.com, Roxy Sewn Up Canvas Bag $38 buckle.com, Straw Sun hat $39 newport-news.com, Stretch Rose Buckle Belt $23 wetseal.com, Silver Deco Filigree 2-Row Necklace $12 torrid.com
What we saw in the 1920s style was a loose but cute blouse and then a ruffled skirt. I did the exact same with this outfit (plus the very cute Mary Janes and Straw Hat). What I think is great about this outfit is how free and casual it makes you look. This is great for picnicking with the girls or even a date with your favorite guy (The blouse, bag, and necklace add just the right amount of femininity to make you look absolutely stunning). This is my favorite of all the outfits.
WHAT DO YOU THINK? (Hope I've inspired you a little bit at least;])
1920s-based Outfit: School outfit
Outfit number one (based on the image on the far left) is the Outfit you can wear to Class:
Details: Drape-pocket Cardigan ($23) from newlook.co.uk, Colorblock Trim Tube ($38) ardenb.com, A-Line Jersey Skirt ($25) yesstyle.com, Michael Kors Black Suede 'Emily' T-Strap Loafers $42 bluefly.com, Black 'Mondrian' tote Work Bag $49 debenhams.com, Panther Belt $33 topshop.com, John Lewis Lightweight Scarf Ivory/Black $25 johnlewis.com
This outfit imitates the loose-looking image of the 1920s woman: slouchy top loose skirt. Overall, a very relaxed sort of look. I took away the hat because (frankly) it looks rather bizarre to be wearing a hat to one of your classes. I added the lightweight scarf to emphasize the lightness and frivolity of the outfit. One important thing to remember when wearing this is that you are not going to a costume party. I did my best to make this outfit as modern as I could. But the best way for you to really make it look Jazz-Age-Flapper-like is not by wearing the clothes but by carrying the feeling with you of being "light".

Why am I dong this? Well, the main purpose of this blog is to help you decide what clothes look good on YOU. There are general categories of preppy, classic, rocker, etc. But, even if you categorize yourself as preppy, admit it! You fall in love with retro pieces too. So why not transcend those categories and create your own subcategories. That is what I'm trying to do here. Notice how this is essentially the Preppy outfit. Plaid shirt, leggings, tote bag, watch, camisole, and flats. But by changing the look of the basics I've created a whole new retro look for all those preps out there who love the retro style. |
