Fashion from "The Notebook"

So you all know the heartwarming romance "The Notebook" starring Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling? Well I think that I'll be doing a series of blog posts featuring Allie Hamilton's Clothing.

In fact, it wasn't until looking over the phoots right now that I realized how much Allie loves wearing red! The red sweater she wore when she first met Noah, her red bathing suit in the famous "If you're a bird, I'm a bird" beach scene, the red print dress she wore as she walked with Noah down a street with an ice cream cone, her dark red dress when she goes to meet Noah again (after many years) at his new house, and even the red blanket she is seen wearing when she finds her mother at Noah's door. THE LADY IN RED IS BACK! (Besides the blue dress in the most famous boat scene of the movie)

HERE'S HOW TO GET ALLIE'S STYLE FOR THOSE OF YOU ON A BUDGET
There are two things that are key to looking like Allie:
  1. Buttons. From the cute buttons-with-collar dress she wore on her first date with Noah to the printed dress with buttons all along the side on the day she and Noah had ice cream together and of course, her blue dress on the famous boat scene. Allie Hamilton is not Allie Hamilton without the buttons. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Pull out your polos or sew on buttons yourself to old dresses from thrift shops to give them a whole new look.
  2. Thick Headbands. From the beach scene to when Allie first visits Noah at his new home, Allie is seen wearing thick headbands with a great flower on the side. Headbands are key to looking 1940s. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Headbands are not expensive at all. Forever 21 has them CHEAP. Can't find a headband with a flower? Make a flower out of fabric scraps yourself! This is all about innovation.
Here are some pics of Allie's attire:

1920s Based Outfit: The Fun Look

1920s Hanging-with-the-Girls Outfit

Details: Silk Sheer Bow Charcoal Blouse $45 shopruche.com, 25" Bohemian Skirt ($23) wetseal.com, American Eagle Caesar Gladiator Flats $23 payless.com, Roxy Sewn Up Canvas Bag $38 buckle.com, Straw Sun hat $39 newport-news.com, Stretch Rose Buckle Belt $23 wetseal.com, Silver Deco Filigree 2-Row Necklace $12 torrid.com

What we saw in the 1920s style was a loose but cute blouse and then a ruffled skirt. I did the exact same with this outfit (plus the very cute Mary Janes and Straw Hat). What I think is great about this outfit is how free and casual it makes you look. This is great for picnicking with the girls or even a date with your favorite guy (The blouse, bag, and necklace add just the right amount of femininity to make you look absolutely stunning). This is my favorite of all the outfits.

WHAT DO YOU THINK? (Hope I've inspired you a little bit at least;])

1920s-based Outfit: School outfit

Outfit number one (based on the image on the far left) is the Outfit you can wear to Class:

1920s School Outfit

Details: Drape-pocket Cardigan ($23) from newlook.co.uk, Colorblock Trim Tube ($38) ardenb.com, A-Line Jersey Skirt ($25) yesstyle.com, Michael Kors Black Suede 'Emily' T-Strap Loafers $42 bluefly.com, Black 'Mondrian' tote Work Bag $49 debenhams.com, Panther Belt $33 topshop.com, John Lewis Lightweight Scarf Ivory/Black $25 johnlewis.com

This outfit imitates the loose-looking image of the 1920s woman: slouchy top loose skirt. Overall, a very relaxed sort of look. I took away the hat because (frankly) it looks rather bizarre to be wearing a hat to one of your classes. I added the lightweight scarf to emphasize the lightness and frivolity of the outfit. One important thing to remember when wearing this is that you are not going to a costume party. I did my best to make this outfit as modern as I could. But the best way for you to really make it look Jazz-Age-Flapper-like is not by wearing the clothes but by carrying the feeling with you of being "light".

Boho Preppy

Once again, a way to transcend fashion boundaries by combining two very different categories.

Details: Plaid Skirt $20 and Heather Knit Vest $13 charlotterusse.com, Sheer Smocked Waist Top $9.99 wetseal.com, Minnetonka 'Peace" Suede Moccasin $39 nordstrom.com, Woven Messenger Bag Flax $35 yesstyle.com, 'Wood you cry for me' Necklace $16 modcloth.com, Leopard Chiffon Flower Headband $12 torrid.com, Solid Ribbed Legwarmers $8.99 and Bracelets $4 charlotterusse.com, Seed Bead Peace Earrings $2.99 tillys.com, Luna Twilight 'Moonshadow' Eyeshadow $20 nordstrom.com.
Gossip Girl's Blair Waldorf is the ultimate fashion icon for "Preppy". She goes to school everyday with a skirt, leggings, flats, a headband, and a messenger-like bag. So to imitate this preppy look, I decided to do the exact same but with a boho style. Moccasin flats, leg warmers, floral blouse, and the ultimate plaid skirt.
Enjoy. Hope you get inspired by this!

Retro Preppy

Retro Preppy
Retro Preppy by Furioso

Details:

Why am I dong this? Well, the main purpose of this blog is to help you decide what clothes look good on YOU. There are general categories of preppy, classic, rocker, etc. But, even if you categorize yourself as preppy, admit it! You fall in love with retro pieces too. So why not transcend those categories and create your own subcategories. That is what I'm trying to do here.

Notice how this is essentially the Preppy outfit. Plaid shirt, leggings, tote bag, watch, camisole, and flats. But by changing the look of the basics I've created a whole new retro look for all those preps out there who love the retro style.

First off, the shirt. The shirt is a typical not-too-expensive American Eagle Outfitters shirt. Very preppy with its plaids (chose blue 'cause it just seemed prettier than the other plaids). But then comes the leggings. Instead of going for the softer patterned look of the season, I go for a hardcore look with leggins from American Apparel. Shiny black! I like the look of the shine on this simple preppy shirt so I add shiny flats. Cute and once again, affordable for college students. This transforms your look from the prep that that shirt showed to the retro girl that the combination creates! (I didn't do much with the camisole since I figured, a black camisole would do perfectly fine. With too much shine, you'll be looking like a Christmas tree).

The accessories now. The big belt at the waist is a hit right now. Nordstrom's all over wearing belts with shirts and sweaters. Well, a belt isn't bad, but let's not lose our retro-ness. SILVER BUCKLE PLEASE! The same goes with the necklace. Links were specially featured in the latest Nordstrom catalogue. So a retro person would probably say...BIG BLACK LINKS. The aviator sunglasses are very cute and retro looking.

The tote bag now. Instead of going with the traditional Abercrombie or A.Eagle tote bag, I decided to try something that made a statement! A statement bag totally makes you stand out in a crowd. Same goes with the watch. Instead of the classic black watch (which most retro people would wear), some stripes of blue goes well with your outfit and with the idea of not being assimilationist.

Now the make-up. Remember this is something you're wearing to school probably. So you don't want to go overload on eyeshadow with the blue. I picked a basic eyeshadow with a bit of shimmer to enhance your look. Then a nice eyeliner from Sephora to give you just the right amount of "dark" on your eyes. The lip gloss. Instead of going with a pretty pink that most lip glosses come in, I've decided to go with a darker pink for just the right amount of femininity and toughness.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS RETRO PREPPY OUTFIT? (I'll be making a Boho Preppy outfit soon too).
